IETE Certified CIRRD Robotics Workshop for School Students

Fast emerging as a field of great promise in the future to come, robotics has found its way into many different industries. Be it construction, medicine, transport, manufacture or some form of serving, basic robots are slowly finding more potential applications in more and more industries and its without question that this is just the beginning. Hence keeping up with the advancements and having some fundamental knowledge about the field might prove beneficial especially to students who are eventually destined to step into this world of rapid technological advancements.

Bearing that in mind, through this workshop CIRRD aims to help students at a school level learn about some of the basics and fundamentals of robotics as well as help them learn some basic programming and give them hands on training in practically making their own functional robot in not just an educative but an entertaining way as well. Through the development of some of these core skills over the duration of the workshop students will be better poised should they decide to pursue the field and will also benefit in terms of being able to present at science exhibitions or as school/college projects.

  • Introduction to robotics- [What is a robot, Types of robots, Scope of robotics]
  • Laws used in robotics- [ 3 laws of robotics, Newton’s laws, Friction, Momentum, Torque]
  • Basics of microcontrollers- [ Evolution of IC, Difference between microcontrollers and Microprocessors]
  • Introduction to Arduino – [What is Arduino, Power management, Digital pins, Analog pins, Crystal oscillator, MIPS]
  • Basics of Voltage, Current and Resistance
  • Software installation– [Installing Arduino IDE, Installing Google Blockly, Installing CH341 driver software ]
  • Interfacing LED – [About LED, Circuit, Software interface, Coding, Uploading code, Troubleshooting, Practical implementation of LED by students]



  • Components in robotics – [Actuators(pneumatic, electric, hydraulic), Sensors (analog and digital, introduction to some sensors), Controlling unit, Power supply ]
  • Building a robot structure– [Brief introduction to all components available in the kit, complete robot structure]
  • Introduction to sensors- [Theory -IR sensor, Ultrasonic sensor , Sound sensor, LDR]
  • Project-[Axis of rotation, Degree of freedom, Logic for motion, Move the robot in all direction]



  • Concept of loops in programming– [ ‘For’ loop , How to stop a loop, AND function, exercises using loop]
  • Interfacing IR sensors – [Get digital input, use digitalWrite() function, Calibrating IR sensor, 2 exercises by using IR sensor by coding ]
  • Obstacle avoiding robot– [Setup robot structure, Fixing IR sensors, Calibrating sensor, Coding ]



  • Serial monitor– [Need for communication, feedback, USART, baud rate, Arduino IDE for communication , Serial.begin() and Serial.println() ]
  • Hello world -[ Use serial monitor and display ‘Hello world’ by coding ]
